8 Reasons to Attend Steve Kaplan’s Comedy Intensive in LA, Dec 4-5, 2010

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to share!
To your success,
Philippa

--

8 Reasons to Attend Steve Kaplan’s Comedy Intensive

1. Does what they say can't be done. “I've been through the Comedy Intensive process, and Steve does what conventional wisdom says you can't - he teaches you how to be funnier. With willingness on your part, he can actually help you harness the comedy in yourself (and, like it or not, we all have it). He has analyzed the comedic interaction, and lays it out as a replicable process. It's actually pretty amazing. I recommend him highly.” Peter Basch

2. Unravel the mystery. Steve Kaplan is one of and maybe the only comedic scientists of our time. He is able to look at comedy, not as some sort of magic that just happens, but in the way a chemist looks at a formula. There are things that work in comedy and for a reason...And no one presents it better and more clearly than Steve Kaplan.” John Ardussi

3. It’ll make you laugh! “As a professional screenwriter I highly recommend Steve's comedy intensive. Take it for the laughs! It doesn't matter whether you're a writer, director, producer or public speaker, if you want to know what you're doing when it comes to humor in general, or to make your own specific project funnier, you'll find it an invaluable (and entertaining) experience.  He's not only an "expert in the field," of comedy but he's also a mensch (ask him what that means)...Steve gets two thumbs up from me, (whenever I'm not typing, or eating, or otherwise doing something else with my thumbs).” Lynn Dickinson

4. Have a great time!  "Steve's class keeps you entertained while teaching you tools that make writing comedy easier. The most useful part for me was learning how creating interesting character dynamics can set up comedy to flow naturally from those relationships. It feels more organic and less forced than struggling to just write joke after joke out of thin air. Even after the course, you'll keep seeing the techniques he talks about used in the best shows on TV. There are a lot of seminars out there that aren't worth your time. This one is." - Tracy Reilly

5. Recommended by Industry Professionals.  “Perhaps it is impossible to describe why something is funny, but Steve Kaplan comes as close as anyone on the planet to doing just that. And if the "why?" of comedy will always remain illusive, Steve can most certainly and with great authority explain the "how?" of comedic invention. Plus, Steve is a very funny guy in his own right, so while you are laughing with him, you are also gaining great insight into the nature of comedy, both historically and most especially within the structure of the storytellers art. Want to know what's funny? Steve will show you.” Frank Gladstone, DreamWorks Animation

6. Use it in other genres. “May I just add to the other recommendations that this course is not to be missed even if you are writing a drama. Steve discusses the difference between drama and comedy, dissecting the dialogue and mannerisms in film clips to show how the genres differ. If you want to make your characters 'real', take the class and pay attention for Steve is a true genius.” Candee Kramer

7. Don't waste a weekend! “Very few things in life seem so important to me that I would give up two whole days to sit in a room listening to someone talk. But as soon as I saw the note from Script to Screen about Steve Kaplan's workshop, I knew I should be there.  It's one of the best decisions I've made. Every single minute of it was illuminating. His teaching was real, authorative, entertaining, warm and generous, just like his character. I wasn't bored once.  I'm a fan of Steve and his work now and hope I get to hang out with him again.” Oscar Kightley

8. Hollywood and Highland!  It’s conveniently located in the heart of Hollywood.

New Indie Publishing Contest - Win $30,000 in Publishing & Marketing Support

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to share info from San Francisco Writers Conference, San Francisco Writers University, Author Solutions & Author Hive...

I just got back from the ALL ABOUT eBOOKS Symposium where I was presenting a session with Rachel Balik of Vook on the Future of Ebooks.  This event was produced in association with the San Francisco Writing for Change Conference and the newly formed San Francisco Writers University.   I've been a speaker at the San Francisco Writers Conference for the past few years.  It's one of my favorite conferences for writers.  I am really excited to be part of the faculty of their latest endeavor.  You can check it out at www.sfwritersu.com.  Many classes are free and the premium classes are only $10.

I am happy to spread the word about their new contest.  Write, Win AND Publish!
New 'Indie Publishing Contest' Revamps the Traditional Writing Contest with the Benefits of Indie Publishing.

And don't forget to sign up for my Media Brand Workshop.  We read everything you've got and work with you to shape your content and marketing messages over the next 5 weeks.  There is a teleseminar lecture on Monday evenings and then small group office hours and private consults in addition to the online group and fantastic group on content creators working on both fiction and non-fiction projects across film, tv, books, media and marketing.  I only have a few spots left.  Register at: http://www.yourmediabrand.com

Here's all the info:

Authors to Compete for $30,000 in Self-Publishing and Promotional Services Prizes as Authors Solutions, Inc., San Francisco Writers Conference, and San Francisco Writers University Partner for Inaugural "Indie Publishing Content"

Since when can a writing contest turn the winner into an author with a published book...and provide a staff of book marketing professionals to help get the book into book stores and publicized?  This is the new reality of combining traditional writing contest with the myriad advantages of indie publishing.  Representatives from the non-profit San Francisco Writers Conference and San Francisco Writers University announced they are partnering with Author Solutions, and its integrated author marketing division, AuthorHive, to launch the inaugural Indie Publishing Contest for Writers.  The winner of this newly created contest will be announced at the 2011 San Francisco Writers Conference at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel, February 18 - 20.

"In this new era of digital publishing with EBooks, Print on Demand (POD) books and more, there are now many paths to publication," said Laurie McLean of San Francisco Writers University and the San Francisco Writers Conference.  "While the Holy Grail remains a contract with one of the big six publishers in New York, the reality is that goal is getting more elusive for writers.  We are offering an indie alternative - establishing the credibility for indie publishing that the indie film and music industries enjoy today."

Writers can begin submitting entries for consideration immediately.  The deadline for entries is January 5, 2011.  The contest is open to all North-American based writers who are invited to enter up to the first 5,000 words of an unpublished, finished manuscript, short story, essay or poem in the categories of: fiction, non-fiction/memoir, children's/young adult, and poetry.  Cost per entry is $35 for fiction, non-fiction/memoir and children's/young adult.  Poetry entries are $25 each.  Go to www.sfwriters.org and click on CONTEST menu button for more information.

See you at the conference in February.  Or in my online workshop at http://www.yourmediabrand.com

To your success,

Philippa

MEDIA BRAND WORKSHOP: SET THE STAGE FOR 2011

Several of you on my list have already signed
up for our upcoming Media Brand Workshop.

If you are not an emerging expert author or
content creator in the process of creating
or marketing content across media platforms,
skip down to the bottom and enjoy the Mp3s.
If you are, then please read on...

I am really excited to share with you an
opportunity for what I know is going to
be a fun and productive couple of months
for all of our participants.

If you're not sure how having a Media Brand
applies to you as an emerging or established
content creator listen to Mp3 from 2010
San Francisco Writers Conference
“Building a Media Brand” at:
http://bit.ly/cFaGJH

I'd love you to take a minute to learn more
about the opportunities this upcoming
Media Brand Workshop will provide for you.

I know many writers, authors, experts and
content creators often struggle with aspects
of their branding, marketing, content
development, networking and general decision
making on how to prioritize.

They often look to representation, when in
fact there are a lot more complex facets of
their brand development that need to be build
out that typically need to be in place in
order to attract the right representation
and opportunities in the marketplace.

You can get all the info at:
www.yourmediabrand.com
Use coupon code: MyList

My role in this course is to create a
safe and supportive environment that gets
you to focus on your content, branding
and marketing.  You'll create a powerful
vision and a clear path to get from where
you are to where you want to go.

I see it as my job to inform, inspire &
challenge. Your job is to participate
contribute and connect. In the process
we look at the various aspects of
creating a powerful media brand.

A "brand" has everything to do with
being a successful writer, filmmaker or
content creator because you are creating
a file in people's brain and you have
to be responsible for the tags on it
and the information in it.

A brand is a promise that creates an
expectation in the mind of others and
is built by repeated interactions.
Everything you do, write or say is an
expression of your promise.  Your
media brand then delivered over
multiple media channels.

Suze Orman, Martha Stuart,
Dr. Phil, Donald Trump, Michael
Crichton, Harry Potter and The
Simpsons are just a few examples.

Whether you are writing fiction or
non-fiction we look at 6 areas of
opportunity & points of access for
you across:
*New Media
*Traditional Media
*Self Publishing
*Traditional Publishing
*Television
*Film

We also go over the 5 skills that it
takes to develop a media brand:
*Brand Identity
*Entrepreneurship
*Storytelling
*Tech/Technology
*PR/Communications

We'll meet on Monday nights and
Thursday evenings from
Nov 14 - Dec 16 at 5:30PM PT
on Mondays and 4PM PT on Thursdays.
There is also an optional session
Monday, Nov 8 if you sign up now!

We have office hours, private consults,
Mp3s and supplemental materials.

This is a content workshop so I will
read blogs, bios, websites, manuscripts,
screenplays and more...I also encourage
you to share your work and provide
feedback to others.

And as it is a Workshop we also have
limited enrollment.

If you're familiar with my
Screenwriting Career Intensive you know
how motivating and informative these
classes can be, but you'll find this
one take a more hands-on approach from
me with your creative and professional
development.

What will you get out of it?
For everyone that is a little bit
different.  We've had alumni with no
previous media experience get full page
stories about her non-profit in People
Magazine & Reader's Digest. Our alumni
Alexis Niki wrote & produced the
webseries "My Bitchy Witchy
Paris Vacation" - and another
alum kindly reviewed it
http://nblo.gs/9viSd
People have gone on to produce short
films, write & perform plays and put
together business plans and book deals.

You can get the information and
register for Media Brand Workshop
at: www.yourmediabrand.com
Be sure to use coupon code:

So far for our Fall 2010 program we
have participants from Australia,
France, Michigan, New York, Los Angeles,
Texas & Virginia.  They are experts,
entrepreneurs, coaches, filmmakers,
storytellers, novelists, TV writers
and more...

They are all also people who've decided
they need some additional support,
insight and feedback to maximize both
impact and exposure. They also like the
idea of having an impartial view as this
is program is provided as an educational
resource.

And what's great about this course is
that it doesn't matter where you are in
the process or if you are interested
in writing a blog and building out your
social networks or building a platform
and developing content worthy of a major
publishing, TV and movie deal.

Plus we'll be bringing in 5 agents/managers
to talk to our group before the end of
the year.  It's a great opportunity to
explore finding the right representation
in film, tv or publishing.

If this sounds like the right opportunity
for you, I look forward to working with
you in this class!

Steve Kaplan’s Comedy Intenstive in Chicago, Canada, LA & NY!

Hi Everyone,

I am huge fan of Steve Kaplan!  He's definitely one of the best teachers and mentors if you are looking to improve your comedy game as a writer, actors, director, producer or executive.  He's fantastic and I highly recommend his weekend intensive.  He'll be in Chicago, Canada, LA & NY in Fall 2010 and Spring 2011, so make your plans to be there.

I also believe it's not only about what you'll learn -- and you stand to learn a lot, but also about the great relationships you can build.  These events are great opportunities to connect with people who are at different stages in their creative and professional development who share a similar passion for storytelling.
Information below.   And if you have more questions about it, I will be interviewing him this upcoming Tuesday, Nov 2 at 5:30PM PT / 7:30PM CT for www.ChicagoHollywood.com.

To your success,

Philippa

Steve Kaplan's Comedy Intensive

We're Coming to Chicago!!

For the first time ever, we're taking the world-famous Comedy Intensive seminar to Chicago! Home of the famed Second City and the Chicago Cubs and now the Comedy Intensive--what could be funnier than that!?!

Friday & Saturday, November 6 & 7
Columbia College:
Ludington Building
1104 South Wabash Avenue
Room 502
Chicago, IL 60605

The Comedy Intensive is a two-day seminar that reveals the hidden tools and principles that help you understand comedy from the inside out: How do you write funny? How do you act funny? How do you direct funny? How do you be funny?

http://www.chicagohollywood.com/Steve_Kaplan_Comedy.html

Here's what Tracy Reilly,
winner of the Expo Screenwriting Contest for Best 1/2 Hour said about the Comedy Intensive:

"Steve's class keeps you entertained while teaching you tools that make writing comedy easier.  The most useful part for me was learning how creating interesting character dynamics can set up comedy to flow naturally from those relationships.  It feels more organic and less forced than struggling to just write joke after joke out of thin air.  Even after the course, you'll keep seeing the techniques he talks about used in the best shows on TV.  There are a lot of seminars out there that aren't worth your time.  This one is."

Whether you're writing a comedy screenplay, working on a sitcom script, or producing or directing a comedy film or television series, Steve Kaplan has been the industry's most sought-after expert when it comes to comedy. From the industry's top stars (Jack Black Nathan Lane Michael Patrick King etc.) to first time comedy writers producers directors and performers, Steve Kaplan has worked with and developed the best.

New York Intensive - March 26-27 2011

STEVE KAPLAN ENDORSEMENTS:

"I wrote...my best, funniest sketches thanks, in no small part, to the lessons I learned from Steve Kaplan's comedy classes. Steve breaks the fine art of comedy down...that helps the unfunny become funny, and the funny become funnier." - David Fury
Emmy-Winning Writer/Producer for 24, Lost, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and more

"Great job! Everybody really loved your seminar! You've completely made a whole new group of friends here at DreamWorks." - John Tarnoff, VP at DreamWorks

"Steve Kaplan was a very important influence on me as a young performer and writer. Many of his techniques for analyzing a comedy scene I still use to this day. Although, I make sure I never give him credit."- Steve Skrovan, Writer/Producer for Everybody Loves Raymond

"Kaplan - the Stanislavski of Comedy!" - Backstage Magazine

"This is best comedy intensive workshop in the city. This is a must if you and are serious about comedy. I highly recommend it to any writer, actors, director, producer or executive." - Philippa Burgess, Entertainment Professional & Partner at Creative Convergence Inc.

Kaplan has worked with the writers of: Sex and the City, Everybody Loves Raymond, Big Love, King of Queens, Analyze This, The Comeback, Friends, Fun with Dick and Jane, 'Til Death, Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show and hundreds of others.

Here are just a few of the
testimonials our company has received
about it:

"Anyone that is looking for a personal
map to navigate through Hollywood should take
Philippa's Screenwriting Career Intensive.
It's not only informative, but also gives
you the knowledge to avoid the common
pitfalls so many writers face. Her passion,
love for writers and her willingness to
answer any question or mystery about how
the Hollywood system works is invaluable.
I felt like I was on the inside
of some secret meeting and Philippa said
to me, 'Follow me, I'll show you the way.'
Simply amazing. Don't pass this one up."
- Scott Fickas, Screenwriter

"It provided me with a great starting
point and helped me to identify all the things
'I didn't know that I didn't know!'
Thanks again for taking the time to share your
experience with us." - Deirdre Woodard, Writer

"Let me publicly thank Philippa for an
eye-opening course and for the wealth of
information she's provided on the Google
Groups site. Over the last few years,
as I've made my way into the business,
I've been quite voracious in absorbing
information from multiple sources, but
I've learned a great deal from Philippa
that I've never heard elsewhere. Within
months of taking her Screenwriting
Career Intensive course, my writer partner
and I secured representation from the respected
management firm Circle of Confusion.
It was our writing that attracted their
attention, but the professional
confidence and insights I learned from
Philippa helped seal the deal." - John Zussman,
Screenwriter

"I appreciate your help and insight and
am excited for our film, Fight Life coming out in a
couple months. If u haven't, check out our website
www.fightlife.tv. Great response and interest
[multiple high end cable buyers] in doing a
distribution deal, among others and I have to
personally thank u for the industry knowledge
from your classes as what I learned is coming in
play in the discussions now in marketing the film.
Bravo to u Philippa!" - Lanser Howard, Filmmaker

Got an Idea for a TV Show? Call Weds 9/15 with Mark & Jeanne Simon

Hi Everyone,

We've got our next Media Brand Workshop
Conversation tomorrow, Wednesday,
September 15th with Mark & Jeanne Simon
of www.sellyourTVconceptnow.com.

Mark & Jeanne Simon are awesome!  If you
are interested in working in TV or
selling your own original ideas
you'll want to be on this call
(or check out the Mp3). Together
they have over 40 years
of experience in producing and
selling TV shows.

Join us Wednesday, September 15th
5:30PM PT / 7:30PM CT / 8:30PM ET

Register at:
http://bit.ly/bf4ljQ

The reason that I am excited to
introduce them to you is that
our management recently signed
one of their clients they'd been
working with this past year.

I've known them for quite some
time as our paths regularly cross
at various industry events and
always heard great things.  Only
recently did I get to experience
the fruits of their labor first
hand -- and wow, was I impressed!

It's not to often that we find
projects that we're super excited
about and clients who are
ready for prime time and all of
its demands.

We weren't surprised to find out
soon after we'd signed them that
they'd had the direction and
insight from Mark & Jeanne Simon
of SellYourTVConceptNow to
get them from a standing start
(complete outsiders with no TV
experience) to this level of
polish and professionalism.

We weren't the only ones who
were excited about them and their
original idea for a TV show that
Fox now has out to showrunners.

If you are interested in selling
an original TV idea I look forward
to having you join us.

Again, Wednesday, September 15th
5:30PM PT / 7:30PM CT / 8:30PM ET

Summer & Fall Roundup - Events & Opportunities

Hi Everyone,

It's August! Hope you are having a terrific summer (or winter) as the case may be for those Down Under.

Creative Convergence just celebrated its 6th anniversary! We incorporated in July 2004 when the company evolved from its original incarnation as the management company Mason Burgess Lifschultz. I co-founded that company in the 1999, so I've got 10 years in as an entrepreneur.

What's really struck me lately is that I have been working in entertainment & media for 20 years now. I got my first internship with The Paltrow Group, Gwenyth's dad Bruce Paltrow, when I was 15 in NYC in the summer of 1990. I also worked as a PA on an ABC Afterschool Special that summer and I remember seeing my first credit on TV when it aired that Fall.

I went from NYC to USC to ICM and then into management. As the business and technology evolved, so did my interests. I am someone who loves to learn and share. I am always interested in solving marketing and creative challenges and bringing people together. Along the way I found a passion for events, technology, and business consulting, and this was important because I loved to help people and the tasks presented to me were much more complex and well outside the scope of traditional management services.

I also found a love for teaching as when it was management, we couldn't take them on as clients without them having something that was market ready with a real understanding of industry, its history, the game and how to play it. In reality a lot of writers are really looking for support, direction and some new insights about how to best approach the business while still in the developmental stage and these courses offered that in spades. This also got me in and out while providing great value without the serious long term and ongoing commitment that is part of a management relationship.

I now see myself as an entertainment professional having personally jettisoned the identity of a literary manager that I'd held for five years after I'd left ICM before and Creative Convergence was founded. The whole name implied that we wanted to support that management was part of the company's role, but that we had a larger vision of what we wanted to do in the entertainment space.

To be clear, we do represent clients and all representation inquiries, should be directed to Brad Kushner at query@creativecvg.com. Or as I recommend to all writers, get someone we know to make the call on your behalf. Professionals always listen when if comes from someone they know at an agency, production company or coverage service such as ScriptPipeline, ScriptShark or Coverage Ink.

As the technology has expanded to allow more people into the system, so have our need to have things filtered. The good news is that there are great, low cost and reputable services to do that while protecting the interest of the writer. We know that when writers and projects are really ready for market they always get "discovered".

These types of services are just some of the hundreds of things we've seen change over the past ten years in business and technology as we've moved from in-person meetings and hard-wired phones to email, web, smartphones, social media, online marketing and digital technologies.  We've watched, and are still watching the film, tv, publishing, media and tech industries transform with old business models and opportunities falling away and new ones emerging.

Any ideas about selling to Hollywood that is written in a book published five years ago is well outdated. It's been my personal crusade to help bridge that knowledge gap -- so that writers and content creators are operating with 21st century information and tools. I also believe that it is important for writers to think of themselves as content creators and make their own inroads into film, tv, publishing and media while seeing them as entirely separate businesses and cultures.

This past year we've been fortunate to have a lot of clients and projects that we're very excited about, many that fit our passion for cross-platform and working with new technologies. We have more then a few things still under wraps that we'll look forward to sharing as they progress.

We've also been active on the conference scene and with our teleseminar courses. I know many of you get our newsletters have connected with us this year through our regular course of business and at NATPE, San Francisco Writers Conference, FTX, The Cable Show, New Media Film Festival, Great American Pitchfest, PitchMart, Produced By Conference, UCLA Vision Awards, LATVFest, LA Shorts Fest, Steve Kaplan's Comedy Intensive and in my Screenwriting Career Intensive and my weekly Media Brand & Marketing Workshop.

One of our bigger projects for Fall 2010 is producing the New Media Film Festival-SF Bay Area Nov 5 - 7. We're really excited about bringing together industry professionals and content creators across film, tv, publishing, games, web, mobile and technology to honor stories worth telling and look at what's new and what's next. Follow on Twitter @nmfilmfest_sf and on Facebook and LinkedIn at New Media Film Festival.
One of the projects that recently came out of my Signature Story Media Brand & Marketing Workshop is writer/producer Alexis Niki's web series "My Bitchy Witch Paris Vacation." This series will be coming out this Fall and in addition to being a Consulting Producer on the project I am looking forward to being on the marketing team. Follow on Twitter @bwthefilm and on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/MBWPV

Here's what Alexis Niki says about the Workshop:
"When I decided to produce my own web series, I brought the project into Philippa’s mentorship workshop. Thanks to Philippa, I'm in the wonderful position of having producers and distributors seeking me for possible collaborations --and the series has yet to launch! While so many talk about 'thinking outside the box,' Philippa actually does it. She sees connections and possibilities where others raise their hands in despair, and she’s not afraid to reach across branches of the industry to create fruitful and mutually-satisfying opportunities. I’m inspired by her generosity, her intelligence, her energy, and how she never shies away from a learning curve. If you have the opportunity to include Philippa on your team, grab it!"

Another thing to look out for is that we're expanding our Media Brand & Marketing Workshop industry guest interview calls and we've got some great ones coming up I've also got a Screenwriting Career Q&A in the mix in advance of my upcoming Fall Workshop.

Cast Your Votes & Make a Difference

Hi Everyone,

It's July!  I can hardly believe the first 6-Months of 2010 are already behind us.
I hope you're progressing well on all fronts in your creative, professional and personal life.
As a member of Your Signature Story one of the benefits is that you are part of a community.
Among us are writers, authors, filmmakers, experts, entrepreneurs and content creators.

Today, I'd like to ask you to take a moment to support some fellow content creators and thought leaders --
people with passion and purpose -- with your online votes.

VOTE NOW!

The first is for a long-time friend from Montclair High School who has dedicated himself
to THE WATER PROJECT!  Peter Chasse and his team are on the ground providing clean
water to African communities.  Given that my dad has spent his career committed to

economic development in Africa and a world that works for everyone -- this
one is really personal to me!!!

The top 200 vote winning charities each get $20K
http://bit.ly/beiked

$20k would let them bring on a new hire and as an entrepreneur I know that's a big deal!!.

And share the link with your networks - a quick Tweet or Facebook post from you and them...something like:

Help The Water Project provide clean, safe water for African schools.
Vote for them to win $250k from Chase at http://bit.ly/beiked

VOTE NOW!

The second round of Votes is to Support entries into Orpah Winfrey's OWN TV Show.

These people need views and votes from you.  I'm going to share just a few of these with you
but feel free to check out others.  There are some really talented folks in this mix.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks so much for your interest in The Best of New Media.

On Wednesday, June 9th we had a great conversation with

The New Media Film Festival was held this past weekend in
Los Angeles at the Downtown Independent.

It featured new media content, filmmakers and

panel featured Greg Boren from Panasonic 3D, Ted Schilowitz
of RED Digital Cinema, Debra Kaufman of MobilizedTV.com
and Chuck Haifley of Big Vision Studios.

Susan Johnston and her team of Jurors and Advisors
reviewed hundreds of submissions to program an excellent
event that featured the best across these categories and
bring together players in the space to talk about what's
new and what's next.

I am including the names of all the films if you
are interested in learning more about them or
want to seek them out to watch in your own time:

Overdevelopment.

This call was the first of many of our Media Brand Workshop
Conversations...with Content Creators, Industry Professionals
and Thought Leaders across Film, TV, Publishing and Media.

We've got an exciting summer line up of guests that I'll be
announcing later this month along with details about the
opportunity to join us for the next session of our
